It’s been around a while now, but the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos continues to smoke like a dream

Curivari & rare 2004 Green Day chip

No matter how many cigars you smoke, there’s so many on the market it’s sometimes takes you a while to discover great smokes like the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos. While we’ve been right there with everyone else on the hot Curivari line, for some reason, we had never paid the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos a visit. Today, we smoke it and let you know just how good it is.

The Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos continues the direct mission of the Cruivari team: create great cigars that smoke and feel like Cuban cigars – still unavailable to the American market, for now. The entire Curavari line is impressive and the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos has become one we’ve put toward the top of the list.

The look of the cigar is nice and neat with a very old school Cuban feel. It’s not by any means less polished than other Curivari lines, but the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos reminds us of the Cuban Partagas and Montecristos with their look and construction.

The Cigar

The dark Nicaraguan wrapper of the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos has a great deep color with a tight roll with down-home Cuban appeal. It’s filler and binder – also from Nicaragua – create a dry draw full of rich cocoa and leathery notes with an ice dash of spice and creaminess. The Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos looks great and after a straight cut and somewhat bland dry draw, we’re ready to light it up and go.

First Third

Although the dry draw was a bit underwhelming, that’s water under the bridge as soon as we light the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos. Instantly we feel a rush of leather, pepper, cocoa and a nice earthy cedar. It’s a nice standard and flavorful natural tobacco note to start and quickly moves to a smooth creaminess. The draw is fantastic and the burn early is to die for. Perfect burn with a great light gray ash right from the start. As we finish the first third, distinct sweet and creamy vanilla notes peek out making our way into the next third full of anticipation.

Second Third

Bam – vanilla, cocoa creaminess and an unequaled smoothness welcome us into the second third and we’re impressed. While the cigar has a distinct medium boldness, the mellowness of these notes equals out some of its power without sacrificing any of its flavor or aroma. We start to feel more of its boldness toward the end of the second third giving yet another impressive and inticing twist as part of the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos experience.

Final Third

While the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos doesn’t lose its distinct creamy notes, the final third brings some more medium boldness in the way of pepper and leather notes in its home stretch. Despite this more prominent boldness, the vanilla and cocoa remain as does its evenness. We smoked it in the morning and it was a great morning smoke paired with an espresso or American coffee. They really made a nice pairing and we highly recommend.

Verdict

How much did we like the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos? So much so we instantly bought a box and stowed it away in our humidor locker. It’s not often you find a medium cigar with a bold creaminess without the sacrifice of great flavor. Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos is on par with the current Cuban-made cigars it was created to emulate. And at an amazingly affordable cost, you’re better off buying it than its expensive cousins from Cuba. We loved the Curivari Selección Privada Diplomaticos and so will you.
