Being mostly Yankees ourselves, we are metaphorically on one side of the Mason-Dixon line. The pre-civil war dividing between the north and south here in the good old U.S. of A is the inspiration for this week’s cigar on stage for our regular Las Vegas Cigar Guys review. This time, we smoke the limited edition Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition thanks to the recommendation of Michael Abdoulah, owner of En Fuego Cigars & Lounge in Las Vegas. In fact, read through review for a special offer from En Fuego on this week’s cigar.

Crowned Heads, the brand behind the Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition, produces two cigars in this “project” line: the aforementioned Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition and the Mason Dixon Project Southern Edition. While we’ll dive deep into the Mason Dixon Project Norther Edition, the Mason Dixon Project Southern Edition has key differences we’ll discuss during this piece.

The Cigar

The Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition uses a deep, dark brown Habano wrapper with Nicaraguan tobacco for the filler and binder while its sister Mason Dixon Project Southern Edition uses Nicaraguan tobacco for the binder and filler as well, but is covered in a lighter Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. The Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition has a stellar deep brown wrapper with a nice amount of oil sheen. It’s constructed well and the pre-light draw was earthy and tight. The distinct wrapper grabs your eye and quickly invites you to smoke its goodness.

First Third

Lighting the cigar was really stellar. Right from the go an overwhelming nuttiness and creaminess mixed with a biting spice graced our lips. For some of us, we really got a strong roasted marshmallow note. It made us feel like being at summer camp for a moment. We knew going in it would be a bold cigar and it starts that way to be sure. The complexity of the various notes sort of lights your world on fire for a while as you attempt to take it all in. We even found the spice from the deep Habano wrapper was felt in our tongue. We’ve never really experienced that much in our years of smoking. The combination of the three of four distinct notes has you on notice as you continue through.

The Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition cigar is one all cigar lovers should have on their “must smoke” list – without hesitation

Second Third

We have to talk about the burn on this cigar first. It was beyond spectacular as we all held and ash of over two inches with a beautiful light gray ash. It burned evenly as
we entered the second third. The cigar continued to be dominated by a bit of the nuttiness but much more now with an strong and bold earthy flavor. Las Vegas Cigar Guys co-founder Bill Dumas described it almost a burlap note. That’s easy to feel as you smoke this well constructed cigar. The spice lingers but in just the right amount after a very bold start. The burn is still excellent and the cigar never gains a harshness present in some bolder sticks.

Final Third

The guys really enjoyed the smoking experience of the Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition. We’re fans of bold and full-bodied cigars, and this one certainly gave us all we could handle. Yet, as we entered the final third, the cigar surprisingly mellowed. It was a surprise to us but we were not disappointed. The strong creamy, toasty, and nutty notes return strongly. It’s a great way to end the cigar somewhat like it started. We found the cigar so enjoyable, we couldn’t help but smoke it to the smallest nub we possibly could (pictured, right). This mellow end to a vibrant, exciting, and complex cigar was perfect.

The Verdict

We’re fans of what the Nashville-based Crowned Heads has been able to do with projects like the Las Calaveras, and the super La Imperiosa. They continue pumping out great cigars with the Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition. The overall balance and mellow finish to a stout smoke has made us fans of this limited edition project cigar. We haven’t tried the Mason Dixon Project Southern Edition, but if it’s half the cigar of the Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition, it has to be a winner too. The Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition cigar is one all cigar lovers should have on their “must smoke” list – without hesitation. Do yourself the favor of picking one up soon.
